A walk around the Coston’s Lane Nature reserve.

The new nature reserve on the south west corner of the park has activity. A large and hugely enthusiastic group of volunteers have started appearing on weekends to create a new reserve area.

I gather the intention is to leave some of the wilder-looking areas natural, but a new pond in the middle will be created and trees around the edges are being planted.

The reserve is a little marshy at the moment, a reminder of why the allotments that used to be on this site were abandoned more than ten years ago. It is also thought that a water main might have started leaking there, contributing to the rather soggy trail in places. During this period of being left alone, some plants flourished. There is an interesting rose at the northern corner that has spread and when it flowers should be a stunning sight. How that lone tulip got there is anyone’s guess!
