This event will be taking place on Saturday 28th November, 2021. Please note that the time shown below should actually show a start time of 10.00, not 11.00.
The trees have just been delivered and they are BIG.
The challenge with trees this big is not merely to plant them, but to keep them alive during hot summers. Trees this big need watering for the first 1-2 years after re-planting. We recently came across a “community orchard” in Pevensey Road Nature Reserve that had been planted in a delightful copse reachable only along a narrow footpath, perhaps 5 years ago. It would have been difficult to get water to them there. And indeed this August, most looked either dead or on their last legs. Similarly, about 15 more mature trees (i.e. not whips) were planted in Perivale Park about 2-3 years ago, along the route of Coston’s Brook. Many put up little or no leaf this year and have now been removed. So, depending on where the new contingent of trees being planted tomorrow are placed, we are going to have to come up with solutions for keeping them healthy during next summer!
