A splash of colour anyone? A guest appearance from the Isabella plantation in Richmond park.

Occasionally other parks in London make a guest appearance here. In April, none can beat the display of sheer exuberant colour that the Isabella plantation puts on. After visiting, you just want to go a lie down in a darkened room to recover.

After all that colour, go seek out the Handkerchief tree (Davidia involucrata), which is a rare tree from China, of which there is a splendid specimen in the plantation. And the heathers are also looking good at the moment. Meanwhile, if the screen on your device has not burnt out from all that colour, go and look at something pastel to let your eyes at least recover.

  1. Very colourful. I’ve got a plant group meeting next Wednesday in Richmond Park so will pop into Isabella & have a look myself.

  2. Now that you mention the looks Cathy, I recollect that it was relatively devoid of scent. Even the heathers seemed subdued in that regard. If anyone reading this can recommend any “scented experiences” please suggest. Even in January, you can find such experiences, eg Sarcococca confusa. And later on if one visits a commercial lavender grower (of which there are a few in south east England) one’s nose would be as overwhelmed as one’s eyes in the Isabella plantation.
